SCHOOL BUDGET VOTE AND TRUSTEES ELECTION ON TUESDAY MAY 17; 1.966% BUDGET TO BUDGET INCREASE; TAX LEVY WITHIN THE STATE CAP
On Tuesday, May 17, residents will have the opportunity to vote on whether to approve the budget the North Shore Board of Education adopted unanimously at its March 31 meeting. The $99,494,105 spending plan represents an increase of 1.966% over the current budget. The proposed tax levy of $84,498,092 is within the tax levy limit established by New York State. A second ballot proposition will ask voters to approve the establishment of a capital reserve that will be used to fund projects over the next decade (see list to the right). The establishment of the fund does not itself impact taxes. The board can put up to $1.5 million each year into the capital reserve from budget surpluses or by transferring funds from other reserve accounts - up to $8.5 million in total over the course of its 10 year term. This year's Trustees election is uncontested, with incumbents Sara Jones and Marianne Russo each seeking a second three year term on the School Board, and Glenwood Landing resident David Ludmar seeking his first. Trustee Michael Nightingale, who joined the board in 2013, has chosen not to seek another term. Polls, located at the High School, will be open from 7am to 10pm.
