The Northwinds Symphonic Band, under the musical and artistic direction of Helen Bauer, will present a special spring concert: Celebrating Northwinds Tenth Anniversary Season at the North Shore High School Theater in Glen Head on Sunday, April 2nd at 3:00 PM.
On the concert will be the world premiere of Introduction and Celebration, a new work by Long Island composer Raymond Osnato commissioned by Northwinds especially for its 10th anniversary season. Receiving commissions from domestic and international ensembles, Mr. Osnato has written three symphonies along with concert overtures, miscellaneous pieces and transcriptions. “I am thrilled to have been asked to compose the work for Northwinds’ celebratory tenth anniversary season,” says Osnato. “Among the commissions I’ve received this is very special to me as it affords me the opportunity to write something specifically for my friends and colleagues in the band.”
The concert will also include works by renowned composers Percy Grainger, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Wagner, John Williams and an exhilarating arrangement of That’s A Plenty featuring members of the band in a traditional Dixieland ensemble. Also demonstrating virtuosic artistry will be Alex Friedman, euphonium soloist, performing the melodic and technically challenging Stars in the Velvety Sky by Herbert Clarke. Cindy Lauda, bassoonist, will be featured in the first movement of the Gordon Jacob Bassoon Concerto. The sax section will play a swinging jazz quintet titled Five to Go. The band will also perform selections from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and demonstrate their strong technique and artistry with the Overture to Candide and the breathtaking and powerful Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.
Please join us for an afternoon of a wide variety of exciting music and entertainment for the entire family. The concert will begin promptly ay 3 PM.
