On July 12, 16 year old Brooke Demetri from Glen Head was crowned Miss Long Island Teen 2016 at Patchogue Theatre.
As Miss Long Island Teen, Brooke hopes to spread awareness about a serious illness that is affecting adults, teenagers, and children today, and to promote her platform, Eating Disorder Awareness. Brook’s campaign, The Healing Hope Project, encourages young men, women, and children to love themselves from the inside and out by promoting what she believes true beauty to be: having self-confidence. Her goal is to bring hope to those suffering this illness in silence and educate people across Long Island about the most overlooked illness that is affecting so many people today. Brook says, “Today our society is fixated on a standard of beauty that the media portrays as the only true image of beauty, which ultimately causes us to feel self-conscious about ourselves. I want to share my message that it’s important to realize that we are all imperfect in our own beautiful way.”
Brooke is a junior attending North Shore High School as an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate and is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. After graduating high school, she hopes to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
Brooke has been involved in many musical and athletic performances since a very young age. She sang a solo performance of “America the Beautiful” at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships at Arthur Ashe Stadium for six consecutive years and traveled across the world to Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia to perform on a music tour. In addition, she was selected to perform in the National Honors Choir at Salt Lake City and Chigago. Brooke is also a competitive figure skater who has been skating for 13 years and a two-time Junior Nationals Figure Skating competitor. Recently, she was selected as a member of the 2015 Conference All-State Chorus in Rochester, NY.
Brooke is grateful to have the opportunity to represent Long Island and be a role model for those around her. She is looking forward to a year full of wonderful experiences and hopes to make Long Island proud!
