North Shore Schools, June 2015, - Congratulations go out to Principal Albert Cousins, IB Coordinator Candice Brodie, and the faculty of North Shore High School for being formally authorized as an International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School, Diploma Programme (DP).
In an authorization letter received in the Spring 2015, Andrew Macdonald, Chief of Schools Officer, congratulated Principal Cousins on this “considerable accomplishment.” He stated, “As an IB World School, you are part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world. We commend your school’s educators, administrators, students and families for their active roles in choosing to offer the IB Diploma Programme.”
What is the Diploma Program? As defined by the International Baccalaureate Organization, the Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced program of education that prepares students, aged 16 to 19, for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society for success at higher education and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The program has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. At its core are three main areas of concentration including:
North Shore’s IB Process? On April 1, 2013, the North Shore School district first submitted an IB application for candidacy to become an IB World School. It was the beginning of the three year application/approval process. The past two years were spent in the candidacy phase specifically training teachers and informing students and the community. In September 2015, the sophomore class will be the first eligible to participate in the IB DP Programme. They were introduced to IB as freshman and have built upon their knowledge of the courses and its components. 43 juniors for the 2015-2016 school year have registered to be full Diploma Programme candidates. An additional 215 juniors and seniors have enrolled in one or more individual IB courses.
North Shore IB Website A website dedicated to providing information to the community was launched earlier this school year in 2014-15. Please visit http://northshoreib.weebly.com/. - The Extended Essay: Students engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects.
- Theory of Knowledge: Develops a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines.
- Creativity, Action, Service (CAS): Involves students in a range of activities. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value.
