On August 21, 2017, Dr. Peter Giarrizzo commences in the leadership role of the North Shore School District as the Superintendent of Schools. He most recently served in the same position at Pelham Public Schools since July 2013, a District in Westchester County widely regarded as one of the nation’s finest. Prior to being named Superintendent, he was Pelham’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Personnel for two years. Immediately prior to his work in Pelham, he was the Deputy Superintendent in the Elmsford Schools.
A Long Island native, Dr. Giarrizzo began his career in education at Valley Stream where he was a special education teacher and an English teacher at the middle school level. He assumed the role of Chairperson of Special Education at Valley Stream North High School in 2000. He then served successive terms, first as Director of Pupil Services at Cold Spring Harbor and later as Director of Instructional Services at Mount Pleasant in Westchester County.
Dr. Giarrizzo received his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from Rutgers University. His dissertation is titled “With Liberty and Justice for All: A Case Study in the Enactment of Rawlsian Social Justice at Lafayette High School.” He received his Masters of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Long Island University and his Bachelor in Science degree in Education from SUNY Geneseo.
When not in our schools working, you’ll find Peter striving to improve his tennis game, baking at home, or traveling the Tri-state area and beyond as a cello and/or hockey dad with his family.
Please help us warmly welcome Superintendent Dr. Peter Giarrizzo to the North Shore Schools. His office is located at the district’s Central Office at 112 Franklin Avenue in Sea Cliff. You can email him at [email protected] or follow Dr. Giarrizzo on twitter @PeterGiarrizzo "Discovering Your Dreams." In addition, he will be writing a school blog titled “Viewpoints of a Viking: Thoughts on Teaching, Learning, and All Things North Shore” that could be found on the new North Shore Schools website at www.northshoreschools.org.

THE NORTH SHORE SCHOOL DISTRICTWELCOMES SUPERINTENDENT DR. PETER GIARRIZZO
To the Editor:
It is my pleasure to support the candidacy of Marsha Silverman in the Democratic Party primary on September 12. Those who regularly attend City Council meetings and other community forums will immediately understand this recommendation. Simply put, Marsha is always the best-prepared person in the room. She is dedicated to keeping on top of all matters related to the governance of Glen Cove. That, combined with her professional background as a financial analyst, means she has the knowledge and acumen to evaluate budgets, proposals and other matters to the benefit of Glen Cove’s taxpayers.
For reasons known only to the leadership of the Glen Cove Democratic Committee, this highly-qualified and knowledgeable candidate, passionate about serving our community, was not selected for the Democratic slate. It’s likely that each of the candidates they selected is sincerely interested in serving the community. But save notably for Annie Phillips and Rod Watson, I’ve not heard the others speak at City Council or other community meetings, nor seen comments from them in the several Glen Cove community-interest pages on Facebook, nor seen letters to the editor on topics of concern to the community in local newspapers. So I don’t know why these others are running or what special talents they may have to offer us.
But I do know why Marsha is running and how having her on our City Council will benefit us. Marsha wants to bring her financial expertise, analytical skills and dedication to the service of our community. Let’s help her do this. If you are a registered Democrat in Glen Cove, please join me on September 12 in casting a vote for Marsha Silverman so that she earns a place on the ballot come Election Day.
Thank you,
Doris Meadows

GOLD COAST PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT ELECTION SET FOR SEPTEMBER 12, 2017
Glen Cove, NY--Hersh Fine Art is pleased to announce Fire & Fiber, an exhibition of ceramic sculptures by Susan Kadish and fiber art by Lauren Rosenblum, both of Long Island, NY.
Rosenblum and Kadish have mastery of an indirect process. They arrive at their work, not through direct visualization of what the outcome will definitely be, but through a skillful manipulation of an uncertain process. In the dyeing of fabric and the fire of the kiln, there is a mysterious alchemy that occurs that cannot be entirely controlled. Kadish and Rosenblum are the directors of processes that are rooted in tradition, but break away into inventive, unchartered territory, with exciting results.
From a family of fashion designers, Susan Kadish’s life has been rooted in aesthetics. She is particularly inspired by East Asian techniques and says, “I have challenged myself with such thousand-year-old pottery methods as hand-building and raku. I have worked with multiple firing, gunpowder and pit firing for different surface effects and properties. There is an allure to pairing ancient techniques with modern and experimental firing.” Kadish has spent nearly a decade perfecting, and subsequently patenting, a process using liquid silver to embellish the surface of her ceramic sculptures. “Each piece is jeweled with thousands of droplets of iridescent silver that shimmer like beads of morning dew on grass. In the firing process the droplets literally bubble through to the surface, dancing atop the under glaze, capturing and refracting the full spectrum of light,” she says.
Rosenblum’s early love of quilting began with traditional designs, and she began dyeing her own fabric with fiber reactive dyes, silk screen and shibori techniques. This gained her notoriety in the field of quilting, but studying classical drawing and painting made a deep impact on her work. In a discussion on fiber dyeing as a painting medium, she says, “I am nudged into handling the brush in a very painterly way, navigating the cloth the way the Impressionists handled landscape.” The synergy of paint, dyes, textiles, and yarn interwoven into Rosenblum’s work also offers an original interpretation of her subject matter. Using inspiration such as flowers, trees, and other garden motifs, organic materials translate other organic materials, forming a union between the craft and the image depicted.
This exhibition will run from September 16-October 26, 2017, with a gallery reception on September 16 from 6-8pm. For details please refer to www.hershfineart.com or contact Rebecca Forster at 516-590-4324 or [email protected].
