Non-Toxic Materials for Home Design Home Furnishings in Sustainable Wood, Handcrafted items direct from Artisans in Colombia, Metal Art from a Haitian Artist Collective Many people say they would like shop “green” and that they would like to use materials in their homes that are sustainable and chemical-free. With the opening of Restoration Oak in Sea Cliff, owner Omar Rivera promises Long Island consumers a whole new kind of shopping destination, one that offers a wide variety of these sustainable, non-toxic paints and plasters for home design, as well as an artisan boutique with merchandise commissioned directly from artisans in the U.S., Columbia and Haiti. The shopper entering Restoration Oak will immediately note the difference: the floors and some walls are covered with reclaimed lumber, a ‘green’ wall features live moss, the sales counter is fabricated from recycled glass, merchandise is displayed on custom floating shelves made of sustainable wood materials, including locally-sourced walnut, pine and beech. The boutique section of Restoration Oak offers hand-made items for home design and personal use, and also features one-of-a-kind furnishings, made of sustainable wood, among them a dramatic dining table constructed of purple heart lumber and supported by tree-trunk pedestals, and driftwood lamps made in the U.S. in addition to handcrafted metal art made by artists of the Haitian artisan collective, Beyond Borders. Sea Cliff resident Omar Rivera is well known for his contracting company, Samix Restoration and Design, which has served many area residents and businesses. In discussing how Restoration Oak will meet the growing demand for green, safe building materials, Rivera cited two of the products from among the wide array his new enterprise will offer: American Clay and Cece Caldwell Paints. Restoration Oak is now the exclusive Long Island distributor for American Clay, a non-toxic plaster material that goes over sheetrock, in place of traditional chemical-laden paints. Based on chalk and containing absolutely no chemicals, Cece Caldwell paints are used for decorative painting and furnishings.
