LETTER TO THE EDITOR
JOANNA COMMANDER: CANDIDATE FOR NORTH SHORE SCHOOLS TRUSTEE
Received from Joanna Commander, Glen Head
April 20, 2017 To the Editor, I am happy to announce my candidacy for re-election to the North Shore Schools Board of Education. During my tenure on the Board, I’ve worked diligently to represent everyone in the district as a as a steward of our taxes and quality of our schools. I am particularly proud of the work I’ve done to insure the health and well-being of our students. I’ve accomplished this through my service on a number of district committees including the District’s Construction Committee, Health and Safety Committee, Wellness Committee, Athletic Policy Committee, Athletic Advisory Committee, District Policy Committee and the IEP Review Committee. Recently I have made another significant commitment to the safety of our children; I am involved in the establishment of the North Shore Coalition Against Substance Abuse, an organization of parents, school personnel, students and community members to develop evidence based strategies for the prevention of substance abuse in our community. As part of my commitment to taxpayers, I’ve asked that we take another step forward in our fiscal transparency that will make even more information available to the public. My experience over the last three years has deepened my insight into local and national education issues as well as the unique needs of our community and I look forward to putting this experience to work for the next three years. My professional background includes over forty years as an educator. I was a teacher and coach for 15 years followed by 18 years as the District Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics for both the Lynbrook and Harborfields School Districts. Following my retirement, I was Adjunct Professor of Health Education at Adelphi University, followed by serving as the Director of Student Teaching for Physical Education students at Hofstra University. It is through these experiences that I have honed a skill set of communication and problem solving that I believe strengthen my candidacy significantly. I am running for re-election to maintain the high standards of educational and extracurricular excellence of the North Shore School District, to improve transparency regarding fiscal spending, and to assist with the transition to our new superintendent. As an experienced member of the board of education, along with my professional experiences in education, I can provide a stabilizing influence during this time of transition. I look forward to meeting with you over the next few weeks to discuss your concerns and ideas for our district. Please remember to vote on May 16, 2017. Thank you, Joanna Commander BACK TO WEEKLY |
