LABBATE ANNOUNCES NORTH SHORE BOE RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN
Received from Toni Labbate, Glen Head April 14, 2015
To the Editor, It is with great enthusiasm, that I announce my candidacy for re-election to the North Shore Board of Education. With many difficult issues facing public education, I am committed to continuing our locally focused work in pursuing a fair resolution to the loss of tax revenue from the demolition of the LIPA Power Plant while keeping our schools strong and effective for our students and all residents. Strong schools equals strong communities, and the North Shore School community deserves nothing less than maintaining our high-performing district. I want to continue our educational programs through offerings that enrich our students and prepare them for higher education and success beyond high school. Twenty-first century skills, such as problem-solving and collaboration are so much more than buzzwords; they are the skills our students will require in the future to compete effectively. I am committed to keeping authentic learning in our classrooms and to focus on learning -- not test taking. Tests have their role in education, but they are not sufficient to fully define a student or solely evaluate an educator’s effectiveness. Our district has been successfully evaluating our teachers in the past and will focus on continuing to drive our commitment to excellence by supporting our professionals. I will continue to fight for our school district. There is no doubt we have a high performing school district and to maintain that, we need to keep local control with strong leaders who are dedicated to all students while remaining fiscally responsible to taxpayers. This year’s school budget increase is the smallest increase in over fifty years. I have worked these past three years with my fellow trustees to find a fair solution to the ramping down of the LIPA power plant, to keeping authentic learning in the classroom, and to challenging our administration to keep improving our programs. As a trustee for the past three years and in my current role as Vice-President, I’ve seen first-hand the achievements and progress of our school district, and I’m proud of my role in our team of strong leaders. Please remember to vote this May 19th. I hope you will support me and help me keep our schools and community strong and effective for all. Sincerely, Toni Labbate Vice-President, North Shore Board of Education BACK TO WEEKLY |
