ROBERT MAZZELLA FOR NORTH SHORE SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEEReceived from Joanie Alvarez Mazzella
May 13, 2014 To the Editor: I have spent the last 25 years in education – the last 22 at Garden City High School teaching Global History and Geography. My husband Robert and I chose to make our home in Glen Head because of the schools. We were familiar with North Shore as both of us had brothers and their families living in the district. Our entire family is deeply entrenched in the community – even Grandma Rose (who now lives with us) is a known quantity at Glenwood Elementary School and in the community. She truly enjoys attending the numerous after-school activities that our district provides. As a teacher, I was attracted to the high performing district but was particularly encouraged by the low student to teacher ratio that my nieces had while attending Glen Head, Glenwood Landing and both the Middle and High School. Teachers are demanding and I have nothing but praise for the education, compassion, and empathy that the North Shore Schools have demonstrated towards our children. Every child counts and this is abundantly clear when one visits our schools. For the past 5 years, Robert has become increasingly involved in various organizations in Glen Head, many of which impact the status of the North Shore School District. He has attended many meetings with state legislators and LIPA officials in order to clarify the obligations that this company has towards the district now that the Glenwood power plant has been decommissioned. It is vital that the community be aware of the financial implications the decommissioning that this entity will have on our district. This involvement led him to be a regular attendee and active participant in all Board of Education and Curriculum meetings. In order to maintain our rigorous standards, difficult decisions must be undertaken and Robert’s professional background has prepared him for this endeavor. He is passionate about putting the children first while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Please go to the high school on May 20th and vote in favor our children. Vote for the budget and vote for Robert Mazzella- For Our Children and Community. Thank you, Joanie Alvarez Mazzella |
