LEARN ABOUT THE INTRIGUING HISTORY OF JONES BEACH FROM JOHN HANC AT THE GOLD COAST PUBLIC LIBRARY
John Hanc will visit the Gold Coast Public Library on Wednesday, October 28 at 7pm to discuss the intriguing history of Jones Beach, which he wrote about in Jones Beach: An Illustrated History. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Gold Coast Library.
Jones Beach opened inauspiciously amidst a howling sandstorm on August 4, 1929. In the years since, it has attracted 500 million visitors and become hallowed ground to generations of New Yorkers. Today Jones Beach evokes cherished memories of long-spent youth, old friends, and departed loved ones. In this evocative illustrated book, author John Hanc explores the traditions, institutions, controversies, and characters of this beloved seaside resort, now a state historic landmark. Mr. Hanc has written or co-authored 13 books. He is a long-time contributing writer to Newsday, a contributing editor for Runner's Magazine and a frequent contributor to the New York Times and the Smithsonian. Hanc is an associate professor at NYIT, where he teaches journalism and communications. Friends of the Gold Coast Library will sell copies of Jones Beach: An Illustrated History and the author will sign them. Registration is required and can be done in-person at the Library, by phone by calling 516-759-8300 or online at www.goldcoastlibrary.org. The event takes place in the Gold Coast Public Library Annex, 40 Railroad Ave. Glen Head. BACK TO WEEKLY |
