“Great Books Spark Great Ideas” Glen Head School began its Reading Celebration on January 4, 2017 (through 1/20) with an assembly led by Principal Lori Nimmo. She introduced the theme for this school year, “Great Books Spark Great Ideas,” and encouraged her students to live curiously and read many books this month! Principal Nimmo said to her elementary students, “For this year’s theme, we want to remind our students that great books inspire, they inform, they set the foundation for new questions and new ideas. As your ideas grow, it is the information you gather that feeds and nurtures it. In order to live curiously, you must explore the world of books and reading to satisfy that thirst for knowledge.” She added, “To make your ideas come alive, you can use all that you learn from books to design a plan to make your greatest dreams come true. There is no greater satisfaction than finding the answer to a burning question, reading something that gives you that ‘AH HA’ moment, or feeling that light bulb shine bright above your head as your brilliant idea shines bright….and, all that after reading a book!” She read, What do you do with an Idea? by Kobi Yamada who in his book dedication gave this advice to his own children, “Always remember, a single idea can change everything.” During the Glen Head Reading Celebration, many exciting events will take place including guest author/illustrator, Meghan McCarthy (visited January 11), a Book Swap Exchange, parent guest readers, creation of all classroom banners, and many library reading activities. In addition, Principal Nimmo thanked the Glen Head fifth graders in the Art Club who made the beautiful “Great Books Spark Great Ideas” banner and had everyone in the gymnasium say the Reading Celebration pledge! Principal Nimmo concluded by encouraging everyone to continue to read, read, read… Photo Caption: Article and photos by Shelly Newman Pictured are Glen Head fifth graders in the Art Club who made the beautiful “Great Books Spark Great Ideas” banner, the theme of the Reading Celebration at Glen Head School.
