July 19, 2017…. Glen Cove prides itself on being a “Community United Against Crime.” To honor that commitment to the safety of our residents, the Glen Cove Police Department is hosting its 11th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event will take place in downtown Glen Cove on Bridge Street in front of the Glen Cove Police Department. Mayor Reggie Spinello and Police Chief William Whitton invite all residents to participate in a fun and educational event to support the safety of our community. This year’s National Night Out special honoree will be Coleen Cole Spinello, a children and community advocate. Coleen was selected for her passionate commitment to public service and the Glen Cove community. In addition, the event will feature a special performance of the National Anthem from area musician Troy Ramey, who was recently a 12 finalist on NBC-TV’s “The Voice.” With her background in child and community advocacy, Coleen Cole Spinello has leveraged her experience as a business executive in the retail and hospitality industries to cater to the needs of children and the Glen Cove community. For over 15 years Coleen has been a Nassau County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and has helped over 25 children to ensure that their voices are heard and that these children are placed in safe, caring and secure environments. In addition to her commitment to CASA, Coleen is one of the co-founders of Glen Cove’s Bully Proof Project, a student mentor at the Gribbin School and a volunteer for many Glen Cove programs including Kids Play Day, the July 4th Children’s Bike parade and the Glen Cove School District’s People as Reading Partners program (PARP). A resident of Glen Cove for over 18 years, Coleen is an active member of St. Rocco’s parish where she manages the church’s food pantry and outreach program. A proud aunt, step mother and dog mom, Coleen has selflessly dedicated her time and energy to helping others. In fact, her generosity can be seen in the bright eyes of a young nine year old girl named Mia, In October, 2016 Coleen donated her kidney to Mia so that this young child could have a future bright future filled with hope, dreams and the love of life. National Night Out will include free tours of the Glen Cove Police Department, TASER and police equipment demonstrations by officers, Operation Safe Child ID badges for kids, an appearance by -2- Mr. Met, and many other exciting activities. In addition, there will be free refreshments, music, a fun bus, and information booths to make for a great night of family fun! Local government officials, police officers, first responders, and community leaders are all eager to participate in this event. “National Night Out is an outstanding program that provides our residents with an opportunity to build relationships with Glen Cove’s law enforcement officers and learn about the many programs and services offered by the City and community groups,” said Mayor Spinello. “This is the most important event the Glen Cove Police Department and Police Benevolent Association (PBA) supports each year as it underscores the critical relationship of our police officers with the Glen Cove community,” said Police Chief William Whitton. “Safety and neighborhood unity all stem from the strength of a strong relationship between our department and the community we serve and protect.” The event is sponsored by the Glen Cove Police Department, PBA, Youth Bureau, Volunteer Fire Department, EMS, The Housing Authority, the Downtown B.I.D., the Printery and local businesses and organizations.
