GLEN COVE ANGLERS CLUB SALUTES VETERANS
September 12, 2016 -- In a salute to those who have served this country in the armed forces, the Glen Cove Anglers Club hosted it first annual fishing outing for veterans this past Saturday afternoon. The event, "Take a Veteran Fishing," was spearheaded by angler Tommy Glen who, inspired by a similar outing on Staten Island, floated the idea to the club, which in turn arranged for the charter boat and solicited support from residents, businesses and organizations who contributed generously to fund the outing and to provide food and beverages. 14 vets turned out, and after an 8 am breakfast donated by the Bagel Cafe, they set sail for six hours of comraderie and fishing.
"We had fish over the rail all day," said veteran Bill Manfredonia of Glen Head. And judging from the pictures, that ain't no fish story. Once ashore, the crew dined on the grilled catch of the day and trays of food donated by the View Restaurant as they enjoyed patriotic numbers and American song standards performed by Pamela Lee and Andrew Anton. "We ate, we fished." Mr. Manfredonia said. "We had a great time." "Next year will be bigger and better," he continued, "We'll double the size of the boat." "This was well deserved," said Mr. Glen. "We're glad to do what ever we can. We're trying to do our little part." And echoing Mr. Manfredonia, he said that this will be an annual event and that vets should keep an eye out next summer for information about the 2nd annual Glen Cove Angler's Club outing for veterans.
