Good evening, the following is an update on several ongoings:
* Sunoco/Bank: the saga continues with the Bank now in possession of the contract after having gone back and forth with Sunoco. I continue to pressure the Bank executives for a signed contract, unfortunately attorneys are involved making sure their clients are covered, thus the delays. Both parties assure me they will sign it soon.
* Glen Head business area beautification: We have held two recent meetings with the Town officials in charge of delivering and implementing the beautification of the area with the $500,000 agreed by Supervisor Venditto to be released for this purpose. We have presented specific details covering primarily the installation of antique lighting starting from the GH railroad tracks to the 4 corners, one block west and up to Bernard's going south. Additionally, and with help from Sergio Tedesco, a local architect, we will also be working on fixing/replacing segments of sidewalks that are in bad shape and are in need of replacement. Included in this project is also the expansion of the brick sidewalk started by the owners of the Jack Shack property, to include the complete row of stores on the south west side of the street. The funding for this project is tied into the Sunoco/Bank sale.
* Traffic study at the four corners in GH: Several months ago the Civics submitted a formal request to Nassau County for a traffic study at the 4 corners, as well as a review of the dangerous crossway by the business area of GH. NC has informed us now that they are actually working on our request and will meet with the Civics on December 5th to review the crossway issue. We are hopeful this review will lead to the installation of turning arrows at the light, as well as some sort of improvement at the crossway where many children, and adults, cross the street.
* NY American Water Co.: We have submitted many resident's bills to Water company for review and are working with their Operation VP to seek answers to the outrageous bills many members of our community are receiving. We have also filed complaints with the Public Service commission and most recently filed an appeal to the PSC's initial response in which they basically tell the Civics that they - the PSC - had approved the corrected bills seen out earlier this year along with a $75 surcharge also received earlier this year. Anyone wishing to have their bills reviewed if they feel they've overcharged can submit their name and address to me and we will add them to the current list for reviews.
* Halms Industries building for sale: After holding meetings with the owner and the real estate developer, the immediate community chose an Assisted Living business as an option for the owners to sell to. Up to now they have not received any offers to buy the property and so we are monitoring the progress.
* GH Rug business signs: As you know the Civics filed a complaint with the Town and the owner was asked to take down the sign. We have asked him to put a softer sign and will monitor the process; the Town has advised him not to open for business until this matter is resolved.
* Meetings with National Grid: As you all know representatives from the Civics held a meeting with NG officials at their quarters in Hicksville. The meeting was positive, however, we received no promises about the future of the plant. We were advised that they would like to sell the property, however, they with to first complete the demolition which will take the project into sometime in 2014. We requested the same group visit with us to hold a Town Hall meeting, they promised to think about the request and get back to us. Last week they contacted me and advised me that because of the possible litigation involved, they would hold meetings with small groups of local Civic members who wish to attend but the groups will have to be small (around 20), however, they can hold several meetings if we wish. The dates for these meetings are being discussed for early January. Once we have the dates Civics can ask folks who wish to attend and we will organize the meeting to be held at their quarters in Hicksville.
* GH Railroad station beautification: The project spearheaded by the Civics (thanks to Will Whein) is nearly completed. The station house has been completely renovated on the outside. Several Civic leaders assisted in selecting colors and we will also be adding flower boxes in the Spring.
Wish you all a great Thanksgiving!! and do let me know if you have any questions.
