CELEBRATION OF CUBAN CULTURE KICKS OFF NSHS CUBA MUSIC TOUR
October 30, 2015 -- North Shore students, parents and grandparents celebrated Cuban culture last Saturday night at a party to kick off fundraising for the upcoming music performance tour of Cuba by high school band, orchestra and chorus students. The February tour will be one of the first by US students since the thaw in diplomatic relations with Cuba, according to Michael Kerschner, NSHS choral director who is coordinating the tour with his colleagues David Soto, band director, and Jason Domingo, orchestra director.
"Danza Cubana" was held at the American Legion Hall in Glen Head and featured a special performance by the High School Jazz Septet. Over 130 guests celebrated Cuban culture with professional Latin dance instruction and Cuban cuisine amid lush tropical decor loaned by the high school theatre department and arranged by North Shore Arts Angels volunteers. The event, which also featured dozens of raffle prizes, raised over $5,000 to defray tour expenses, according to Mr. Kerschner.
