LETTER TO THE EDITOR
CHERYL BROWN - CANDIDATE FOR THE NORTH SHORE SCHOOLS TRUSTEE
Received from Cheryl Brown, Glen Head
April 22, 2017 To the Editor, My name is Cheryl Brown, and I would like to announce that I am running for a position on the Board of Education in the North Shore School District. I am really excited and honored to be a candidate and I am committed to representing our children and our community. I have lived in Glen Head for 8 years with my husband Rob. We have three children who attend the North Shore Schools: our oldest daughter is in 10th grade at the High School, our middle son is in 8th grade at the Middle School and our youngest is in kindergarten at Glenwood Landing Elementary. Rob is a graduate of the North Shore Schools which is why we decided to buy his parents’ home and raise our children here. We love the schools and this wonderful community that we are invested in. I am a first grade teacher with 21 years’ experience in the Islip School District. I love my job and am passionate about what I do. Over the years I have advocated for the 475 plus students that I have had, and my belief in a student-centered approach will guide me as a trustee - what is best for our children is best for our community. Over the last five years I have gone to Albany and met with legislators because I have been disheartened by many of the state and federal educational reforms and unfunded mandates that jeopardize the quality of our children’s education and public education itself. Last month I went and advocated for North Shore to receive additional funding next school year due to the closing of the LIPA plant. I am running for the Board because I believe that we are in a critical time in public education and a time of transition in leadership in North Shore. I would like to be a part of maintaining all that we have, as well as continuing to move the district forward. As a mom with children in all three levels, an educator, an advocate and an involved community member, I have a lot to offer the Board. and the community. I am also a homeowner and taxpayer. With a daughter about to go to college in 3 years I understand how costly it is to live on Long Island and in Glen Head. It is important to support our school district, however we cannot over-burden our community with higher taxes or exceed the the tax cap. I look forward to working together with the community, schools, parents and administrative leadership to continue to ensure a quality education for our children. Thank you for your support.
