ASSEMBLYMAN LAVINE SECURES AN ADDITIONAL $500,000 GRANT TO OFFSET TAX SHIFT FROM POWER PLANT DECOMMISSIONING
April 3, 2014 -- In anticipation of a potential loss in tax dollars from the decommissioning of the Glenwood Landing Power Plant, Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) secured half a million dollars in funding from the New York State Assembly for the North Shore School District in the 2014-2015 New York State budget that was adopted earlier this week. This grant is in addition to the $500,000 that the Assemblyman was able to secure for the district last spring.
The funding is intended to provide some measure of support for the school district and homeowners as the tax burden is shifted from National Grid, the owner of the property, to residential taxpayers, as the demolition of large sections of the plant continues and the utility seeks to reduce its assessment. Assemblyman Lavine said that the allocated funds should alleviate some level of concern for constituents who would be impacted by the plants closure. “This funding should provide some measure of relief to the North Shore School District in continuing its excellence in spite of the loss of tax dollars.” |
