The Glen Cove Youth Bureau, in cooperation with the Friends of the Glen Cove Youth Board is teaming up with local citizens, organizations and businesses to provide back to school supplies to disadvantaged youth in our community. A backpack filled with supplies is presented to children who otherwise would not have what they need to succeed in their studies. Last year, 266 children in grades K – 12 received back to school supplies as a result of this effort.
Given the cost of getting ready for school, the need is greater than ever this year. For example, on average it costs $78.00 to purchase all of the supplies on the school list for a 1st grader in the Glen Cove School District and $83.00 to supply a 4th grader. This cost simply covers school supplies. It does not cover back to school clothing, shoes, coats, etc. For families living on a fixed income, especially those with more than one child, these expenses are often impossible to absorb. When the family forgoes purchasing school supplies, it is the student who suffers.
Please consider making a donation to this worthy project. Some of the supplies that will be collected by the Youth Bureau include:
• Backpacks (no wheels) • 3-ring binders (all sizes, especially .5”, 1”, 1.5” & 3”) • Thin and thick washable markers • #2 pencils • Erasable and regular pens in (blue, black, red, green) • Colored pencils • Highlighters • Loose leaf • Zippered pencil case with 3 holes • Small pencil sharpener • Marble/composition notebooks • Post-its (3”x3” & 1.5”x2”) • Index cards (3”x5” and 5”x8”) • Folders (red, green, blue & yellow) • Section dividers • Glue sticks (regular & jumbo) • Kindergarten pencils (thick) • Portable 3-hole punch • Protractors • Plastic page protectors • 2-gig or larger flash drive • Dry erase markers and erasers • Graph paper • Erasers • Elmer’s glue • Inexpensive headphones and earbuds • White out • Kindergarten pencils (extra thick) • Box of 24 crayons • Scissors • Rulers • Play Doh (4 pack)
