Sea Cliff Students Participate in National Down Syndrome Society's Annual Buddy Walk
The Sea Cliff School K-Kids, a student organized devoted to serving the community through charitable works and other initiatives participated in this past Saturday's National Down Syndome Society's annual Buddy Walk held at Tanner Park in Copaigue. "Every year our group gets bigger and bigger," said Sea Cliff Teacher Mark Mihopulos, K-Kids adviser. "It just shows so well our community's selflessness and committment to inclusiveness." He has been organizing teams for the event for the last several years now to help show support for people with Down Syndrome and raise funds for programs and servcies as well as national advocacy initiatives. Participating on Saturday were Sea Cliff Students Henry Madden, Kyprian "Kypa Kallaur, parents Cathy Madden, Manya and Alyosha Kallaur. The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome.
North Shore Schools, Glen Head, NY, October 8 - This weekend at the National Down Syndrome Society's annual Buddy Walk, Team North Shore grew to comprise many students and their siblings, as well as parents and teachers from Sea Cliff Elementary School! The team even included a four-legged friend! Teacher Mark Mihopulos said, “We celebrated DownSyndrome Awareness Month (October) by fundraising online, walking a mile as a team, and enjoying music and festivities at the bayside Tanner Park in Copiague, NY.” The annual Buddy Walk was started in 1995 by the National Down SyndromeSociety
“This year was our biggest team yet,” said Mr. Mihopulos. “I feel our community is one of the most ground-breaking in its inclusiveness and supportive team nature, as demonstrated by the selfless participation of so many students and families.” The students (and siblings) included Matthew and Grace Ryan, Ava and Dino Petersen, and Kyprian "Kypa," Manya and Alyosha Kallaur. The Sea Cliff teachers in attendance included Mark Mihopulos and Kerry Robertson. Many thanks to all of the parents for their support in making this year's event such a success!
Team North Shore is sponsored by the Sea Cliff K-Kids, under the advisement of Mr. Mihopulos. They raised approximately $200 to further awareness and research in support of Down Syndrome on Long Island. Please consider joining Sea Cliff School K-Kids in an effort to participate in community outreach and social action by organizing a team for Alexander’s Angels Buddy Walk. This organization furthers the awareness and supports research on Downs Syndrome.
The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome. Since then the Buddy Walk, organized by local organizations, has spread throughout the country and abroad. Alexander’s Angels in collaboration with many institutions and other DS organizations, is the organizer in Long Island.
The walk will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016 promptly at 12:00 noon at Tanner Park in Copiague, NY. We will meet on the immediate left hand side when facing the large stage. All children must be supervised by an adult. The event team, Team North Shore, will be sponsored by the Sea Cliff K-Kids. It is a 1 mile walk.
