Over the weekend of March 28th to March 29th 2015, Boy Scout troop 43 of Sea cliff, New York, visited the USS Nautilus in the Submarine Force Museum and the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. It was a fun and educational experience for the Scouts and adults who went on the trip.
When troop 43 arrived at the Nautilus museum we were split into three groups and given a tour of the museum and the submarine by former submarine crew members. In the museum, we were taught about how the submarine controls work, how they navigate and a lot about the history of the submarine itself. We also learned about the torpedoes on a submarine and how they work.
After we explored the museum our Troop entered the Nautilus itself. It was very cramped and humid inside the sub. We were able to understand what living on a submarine felt like. We also saw how the sailors worked, ate and slept. It was a very interesting experience for all of us.
Troop 43 then visited the Mystic Aquarium where we had lunch and then observed the many different ocean animals that were there. Some examples were, sharks, beluga whales and many different types of rays. That too was a fun experience.
After the aquarium we traveled to our campsite back in Groton, Connecticut. When we got there, most of the scouts got straight to work trying to start a fire for dinner while it was cold and snowing. Making a fire seemed difficult because of the lack of dry wood, cold and wet conditions, but using the skills we have learned, we were able to get the fires going. Each patrol made a delicious meal that night.
After we woke up the next morning our troop ate breakfast, cleaned and packed up. It was very cold and ground was covered and snow that morning. Troop 43 had a terrific time on the trip. It was fun and informative.
