EXCESS COSTUMES SOLD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DISTRICT THEATER PROGRAMS
Savvy shoppers picked up great Halloween bargains and had fun dressing up last Saturday at the Halloween Costume Sale at North Shore High School, an event organized by North Shore Arts Angels, the district's booster club for the arts. A typical customer spent about $15 and over $3,500 was raised by the sale of excess costume and prop items, according to Julia Brennan, who coordinated the sale for Arts Angels. Another $2,000 was expected in rental credits for unsold items that will be donated to the non-profit Theater Development Fund's (TDF) Costume Collection, a NYC-based program that provides low-cost rentals to schools and community groups, Mrs. Brennan said.
A major goal of the sale was to reduce the district's collection of theatrical costumes and accessories so that the remainder could be stored in a smaller space made available for the purpose at the high school where students costuming future productions will have direct access to costumes, Mrs. Brennan said. Previously, theater costumes, including many items made for past shows by students and community volunteers, and others that were donated by residents, were stored in the space that formerly housed the district transportation depot behind the Glenwood Landing School, and parent volunteers were required to undertake the cumbersome job of hauling costumes back and forth between the theater and the storage space, she said. Members of the North Shore Viking Masquers and the Middle School Drama Club assisted in the sale along with several Arts Angels volunteers and district theater faculty. All items that were not sold or donated to TDF were bagged by volunteers and put in clothing donation bins around the community. Members of the Viking Masquers Costume Crew, now preparing for the High School play "Almost Maine" which will presented November 20 and 21, are assisting in the transfer of the remaining costumes to the new storage space in the high school, Mrs. Brennan said.
