April 5, 2017 - According to school district officials,502 of the 1221 North Shore students enrolled in grades 3-8 who were scheduled to sit for the New York State Common Core English and Language Arts assessments that were administered over three days last week opted their children out of the exam. The test refusal rate was remarkably similar to what it had been during the previous two years.
The boycott rate of 41% is slightly lower than the Nassau County average of 44.1% reported in Newsday and 10% below the 51.2% of students who did so in the 116 of 124 districts across Long Island that reported their figures.
The significantly higher number of opt outs in the eighth grade skewed the numbers upward. In the elementary schools, similar to last year, Glenwood Landing had by far the lowest percentage with just over a quarter of the students there refusing the exams. 38% refused at Glen Head School and 40% at Sea Cliff.
